The political news cycle is fast, and keeping up can be overwhelming. Trying to find differing perspectives worth your time is even harder. That’s why we have scoured the internet for writing from across the political spectrum that you might not have seen.
Attorney General William P. Barr testified for five hours on Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, defending his handling of the special counsel’s report. (On Thursday, Democrats threatened Mr. Barr with contempt after he failed to appear before the House Judiciary Committee. Read the latest here.)
Here’s a look at what writers of opinion articles and editorials are saying about his appearance on Wednesday, his absence on Thursday, and what comes next.
From the editors of National Review: An “incredibly dumb” scandal
“Is it already August? That’s usually the Beltway silly season appropriate for such a ridiculous non-scandal as the Great Bill Barr Summary of Findings Outrage of 2019.”
The editors wrote that the criticism of Mr. Barr’s letter summarizing the Mueller report was unfounded, saying it had become “an obsession for Democrats and the press and the focus of endless conspiracy theories.”
Those parties “are acting as if Barr engaged in some sort of cover-up, when he went further than required under the regulations to release all of the report with minimal redactions,” they wrote. Read more >>
_____
From the opinion section of Fox News: “Barr is right not to testify before House” Democrats
Robert Charles, a former assistant secretary of state for President George W. Bush, wrote in an opinion piece that Mr. Barr was right not to return to Capitol Hill on Thursday to testify before House Democrats.
He strongly criticized Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, for his attempt to force Mr. Barr to take questions from outside lawyers.
“Barr is right not to appear before outside counsel at a House Judiciary Committee that played fast and loose with the facts, then bait-and-switch with committee promises, and now threatens him with a subpoena and contempt.” Read more >>
_____
From The Nation: Mr. Barr “was acting as President Trump’s defense lawyer”
John Nichols, the national affairs correspondent for The Nation, accused Mr. Barr of overseeing an attempt to protect Mr. Trump and his associates from legal and congressional scrutiny in his summary of the Mueller report.
He called the hearing “an empty exercise characterized primarily by Barr’s attempts to obscure his own wrongdoing.”
“… he came off as Sarah Sanders with a law degree — a shambling propagandist seeking to create confusion.” Read more >>
_____
From Mother Jones: Barr’s testimony was “deeply misleading”
Dan Friedman, a reporter in the Washington bureau of Mother Jones, wrote that Mr. Barr’s statement that Mr. Trump had “fully cooperated” with the special counsel was false, and said the claim “set the tone” for the hearing.
“… he repeatedly made misleading assertions about Mueller’s investigation and failed to correct flatly false claims made by Republican senators.”
He added that Mr. Barr’s defense of the president “was buttressed by even more aggressive falsehoods” from Republican lawmakers during the hearing. He criticized assertions by Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, that Mr. Mueller had concluded that there was no collusion. Mr. Friedman wrote that the report explicitly avoids the word “collusion.” Read more >>
_____
From the editors at Bloomberg Opinion: “Another gross political circus”
The editors wrote that Mr. Barr’s responses amounted to “a bravura defense of his boss — and an unintended indictment of American politics.” They faulted Mr. Barr for creating “the impression that the president had been cleared of wrongdoing” when Mr. Mueller had not said that explicitly.
They also criticized the approach taken to get to the bottom of Russia’s role in the 2016 election, saying the appointment of a special counsel was “an awkward fit” with a limited scope, and a panel similar to the 9/11 Commission would have been better.
They added that after two years of investigation, the report had now been reduced to “another gross political circus” — one that they expect will get worse.
“Expect months of subpoena fights, court battles, tendentious hearings, simmering paranoia, scaremongering, recrimination — the whole partisan maelstrom will continue.” Read more >>
_____
From The Atlantic: A “catastrophic performance”
“Not in my memory has a sitting attorney general more diminished the credibility of his department on any subject.”
Benjamin Wittes, editor in chief of the site Lawfare and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, wrote that he had avoided criticizing Mr. Barr until now — and called his performance “catastrophic.”
Mr. Wittes added that he did not believe that Mr. Barr had lied or committed perjury — but that it “is possible to mislead without lying.” He wrote that Mr. Barr’s public statements on the report “reflect at least seven different layers of substantive misrepresentation” that amount to “a dramatic rewriting of the president’s conduct — and of Mueller’s findings.” Read more >>
